mushroom hill zone
I’ve been tracking down Dreams Come True videos for almost 10 years now, but this is a first - they incorporate cues from Sonic’s theme song in this live performance of “Ring! Ring! Ring!” from their 1990 album Wonder 3. You can hear it in the middle (1:27) and at the end (3:39) of the song.
Considering the title, and the refrain of “Speed Up!”, it’s a pretty appropriate song to give a little shout out to Sonic with.
Here’s a word cloud of the words in Sonic zone names, with words appearing larger the more often they are used. Maybe it would make a cute wallpaper. =P
Notes:
- I used wordle.net to make this.
- I modified some compound words, e.g Star Light to Starlight or Hydrocity to Hydro City so they’d be “detected” properly.
- Zones whose name appears in more than one game, e.g. Green Hill, Rail Canyon, Metal City, Angel Island were only listed once.
- I left out the gibberish alien words from Sonic Chronicles’ titles.
- I standardised the spelling of savanna to savannah.
- I added -opolis to the list separately.
- I removed possessives, e.g. Dragon’s to Dragon.
I listed zones from the following games:
- Sonic 1
- Sonic 1 (8-bit)
- Sonic 2
- Sonic 2 (8-bit)
- Sonic 3
- Sonic 3 (Competition)
- Sonic & Knuckles

Decided to reblog this since it makes more sense here at The Sonic Second than on my currently fallow personal blog.
New images of the Sonic 1 prototype from the 1990 Tokyo Toy Show, showing more clear frames of the pre-Badnik enemy and slight differences in Sonic’s sprites.
The images are from the August 1990 issue of MegaDrive Fan magazine.

Sonic wasn’t the first to use the ribbon and ring emblem for its title screen. Quite a few things did it before Sonic 1, in fact.
Toriyama’s Dr. Slump is the earliest (that I’ve discovered), and it was extremely popular, so it’s possible it started the whole trend. It’s also the most similar to Sonic, with the characters popping through the ring.
Can you feel the Sunshine? Does it brighten up your day?

Picked up this 1994 Sonic calender from a car boot this morning, some great artwork in, nostalgic!
Hudson’s Adventure Island III (1992) appears to have been, shall we say, heavily influenced by the faux-polygonal graphical style of Sonic. I mean, look at that palm tree! They even added a new dinosaur friend with a very familiar rolling attack…
It’s interesting that the ending sequence - falling through the sky after defeating the bad guy, and being caught at the last moment by a flying friend - actually bears more of a resemblance to the concept Sonic 1 ending, and of course the ending of Sonic 2 which was released later. Maybe it was a common trope at the time?
Anyway, try this headcanon on for size: The Adventure Island games actually take place on South Island in prehistory.
One of the silly things from the early Japanese manuals was characters going through the “what not to do with the cartridge” list. Sonic here with his new fangled cellular phone and stomping on a cart is real cute.
